A table worth the trip · New York, United States
Ali El Sayed has cooked Alexandrian Egyptian food in this narrow Steinway Street storefront since 1989, largely by himself, and without a fixed menu. You sit down, he tells you what he has, and the meal happens: a mixed mezze platter, Egyptian-style falafel, roasted cauliflower, lamb chops with pomegranate molasses, calves' brains if you're willing. The room is tiny and the evening is as much his storytelling as his cooking. Closed Mondays; otherwise open from 1pm.
A one-man Egyptian kitchen on Steinway Street where there is no menu and the chef decides what your dinner is.
