A view worth the climb · Taipei, Taiwan
A pale sandstone outcrop above Beitou that breaks out of the tree line shaped like a ship's prow, about 30 minutes above the streets. The summit is bare rock with a 360-degree sweep over Beitou, the Tamsui river plain, Guanyin Mountain and Taipei 101 in the distance. Centuries of feet have worn deep grooves into the stone that now function as a natural staircase. It is short enough to do before work and exposed enough that you need water in any season.
A bare rock prow over north Taipei that takes half an hour to reach and still feels like a summit.
