A green pocket the city kept · Taipei, Taiwan
A 57-hectare wetland reserve at the confluence of the Keelung and Tamsui rivers, saved from becoming a stadium by campaigners in 1996 and opened as a park in 2001. It is run by the Wild Bird Society of Taipei, holds more than 830 recorded animal species including around 230 birds, and is listed as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International. Boardwalks run out over the marsh to hides, and the two-storey nature centre has an observatory with high-powered binoculars. Guandu MRT on the red line is a short walk away, and a riverside YouBike ride is the other way in.
The one place in Taipei where the river becomes marsh and 230 species of bird turn up to use it.
