A trail worth the early start · Taipei, Taiwan
A craggy summit 320 metres above the city on the Nangang Mountain ridge, one hill east of Elephant Mountain and a fraction as busy. A thumb-shaped rock marks the top and a small platform gives an unobstructed 360-degree sweep over Xinyi, the Keelung River and the Yangmingshan wall behind. Reckon on an hour to 90 minutes, with steep rocky sections near the top that want proper shoes. Carry along the ridge and you reach 95 Peak and Nangang Mountain at 375 metres.
The Four Beasts view without the Four Beasts crowd, and a summit rock you can have to yourself.
