Green space the city keeps · Hanoi, Vietnam
A privately run flower garden on the Red River flats at Nhật Tân, north of the West Lake district, reached down an alley off Âu Cơ. Rotating meadows of flowers are planted between deliberately staged junk — derelict cars, beached boats, painted tyres, cardboard castles strung with lanterns and huts half-buried in tall grass. There is a strawberry patch, wooden shelters with tables and roofs, and food and drink stalls at local prices. It is a set built for photographs rather than a botanical garden, and it is where Hanoians come to take them.
Hanoi's strangest garden: flower meadows staged around wrecked cars and stranded boats on the river flats.
