A table worth the trip · New York, United States
A counter-service Thai rice-and-curry shop — a raan khao kang, the format found on every Bangkok street — on Woodside Avenue in Elmhurst. Chef-owner Sopon Kosalanan, who learned to cook from his mother and grandmother in Chanthaburi, lays out about ten dishes in steam-table pans each day and you point at what you want. The cooking is southern- and eastern-Thai and refuses to soften for anyone: sour yellow curry with fish and bamboo, tai pla, pork belly stewed with egg, fried garlic pork. Open daily, 11am to 7pm.
Point at the pans and eat the most uncompromising Thai cooking in a neighbourhood full of Thai cooking.
