A forest kept quiet · Sóc Sơn, Vietnam
A pagoda set more than 110 m above the foot of Núi Sóc, inside the Đền Sóc complex on Hanoi's northern edge, roughly 35 km from the centre. It sits in the middle of a curved forested ridge that wraps around it like the arms of a chair, looking down over a lake and the hamlets of Vệ Linh. The wider complex — Đền Trình, Đền Mẫu, Chùa Đại Bi, Đền Thượng and this pagoda — was made a national special heritage site in 2014. Above it the wooded slope climbs to the 297 m summit of Vệ Linh peak.
The only real forested climb left inside Hanoi's own boundary, ending at an 85-tonne bronze horseman.
It's only worth the detour Oct–Apr. Turn up outside that window and you're looking at a different place; we'd rather say so than sell you the photo.
