A market locals actually shop · Istanbul, Turkey

One of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, the Grand Bazaar began under Sultan Mehmed II around 1455 and grew into a warren of 61 covered streets and over 4,000 shops. Sections cluster by trade: gold and jewellery, carpets, ceramics, leather and lamps. It remains a working market as much as a monument.
Losing yourself in a 15th-century maze of vaulted lanes, glinting lamps and haggling merchants.
