A museum worth a slow afternoon · Marrakech, Morocco
A douiria — the guest apartment on the first floor of an aristocratic house — built in the 1560s at 4-5 Derb el Hammam, in the lanes behind the Mouassine fountain. Bought in 2012 and stripped back with the help of a Louvre curator, the restoration found pinkish gypsum stucco and painted cedar ceilings under layers of modern plaster, and the house opened to the public in 2014. Since 2019 it has doubled as Marrakech's museum of Moroccan music, with instruments set out in the square central salon and its side alcoves. Open every day, 10am to 7pm.
The best-preserved Saadian room in the medina, up a staircase nobody in the souk thinks to point you towards.
