A gallery worth the detour · Rome, Italy

A vast Baroque palace near Piazza Barberini holding part of Italy's national collection of older art, with over a thousand works from the 13th to 18th centuries. Highlights include Raphael's La Fornarina, Caravaggio, Holbein and El Greco, beneath Pietro da Cortona's enormous ceiling fresco. The rooms are large and rarely packed, so it rewards a slow visit.
A grand palace and first-rank paintings you can take in calmly, without the queues of the bigger sights.
