A 15.5-hectare English-style park on the southern edge of Paris, inaugurated in 1875 above former quarry galleries — 800 skeletons were removed before construction. A one-hectare artificial lake fed by a rock-and-cement cascade anchors the lower slope, its island a sanctuary for some 40 waterfowl species, and the RER B and the abandoned Petite Ceinture railway both cut through the grounds.
The 14th's own Buttes-Chaumont — same Alphand-era drama, a fraction of the visitors.
