The experience
The original Chez Gladines, a Basque canteen on Rue des Cinq Diamants in the village-like Butte-aux-Cailles of the 13th. Gargantuan bowls of salad buried under fried potatoes, cheese, egg and meat, plus poulet basquaise and cassoulet, rarely cost more than €10–12, and the packed room seats diners elbow-to-elbow. Open daily for lunch and dinner.
The 13th's beloved cheap-eat institution, where the queue in the street is made of students and neighbours, not tourists.
