Somewhere to stop moving · New York, United States
A working Russian banya at the far western end of Mermaid Avenue, past Coney Island at the gate of Sea Gate, with three Russian steam rooms, a scorching dry sauna, a Turkish bath, two ice-water pools and a jacuzzi in a lodge-like wooden hall. The restaurant does borscht, compot, chai, Slavic plates and beer, and most people alternate steam and table all afternoon. It opens daily from 10am to 11pm, and admission runs on a strict clock rather than to closing time.
The real Brighton-Beach-belt banya, an hour from Manhattan and full of people for whom this is simply Sunday.
