A shoreline worth the journey · New York, United States
A small city beach on Oriental Boulevard at the eastern tip of Manhattan Beach, on the former grounds of Austin Corbin's 19th-century Manhattan Beach Hotel. It opened in 1955 for the express purpose of relieving the crowds at neighbouring Coney Island and Brighton Beach, and it has been doing that ever since: playgrounds, basketball and tennis courts, picnic and barbecue areas, outdoor showers, and a calm stretch of sand. Gates are open 6am to 9pm.
The beach New York built to take the overflow, which is precisely why it stays calm while Brighton fills up a mile west.
