A stretch of coast worth the drive · New York, United States
A pocket of sand, lagoon and wetland on the north shore of Rockaway Inlet, part of Gateway National Recreation Area since 1972, with its own parking lot straight off the Belt Parkway and a greenway path along the shore. It erodes badly — incoming storms drive water up the inlet past the beach and into Jamaica Bay — so the shoreline shifts year to year. Open daily 6am to 9pm, dog-friendly, and reachable on foot through the wooded ground beside Gerritsen Creek.
The one beach in New York City where you can stand on the sand and watch horseshoe crabs mate.
It's only worth the detour May–June for the spawning crabs and summer afternoons for the sea breeze; no lifeguards at any time of year, so swimming is not permitted. Turn up outside that window and you're looking at a different place; we'd rather say so than sell you the photo.
