A triangular basement room at 178 Seventh Avenue South, open since 1935 and booking jazz exclusively since 1957. More than a hundred live albums have been recorded on its tiny corner stage, and the room has barely changed: wedge-shaped, low-ceilinged, seats packed to the walls, doors at 7pm. It is the one unavoidably famous club on this list and it earns the queue.
