Construction of the Grand Palace began in 1782 when King Rama I moved the capital across the river to Bangkok, and it served as the royal residence for generations. Within the walls sits Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Thailand's most revered temple, built in 1783 to house a small jade-green Buddha figure. The complex is a dense cluster of gilded chedis, mirrored spires, mural-lined cloisters and demon guardians.
The single most concentrated display of Thai royal and religious architecture, all inside one walled compound.
