This fortified tower on the Belem waterfront was built between 1515 and 1521 to guard the mouth of the Tagus, and is Portugal's purest example of the ornate Manueline style, all rope-carved stone, maritime motifs and Moorish turrets. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, it stands as a symbol of the Age of Discoveries. It sits just steps from the river promenade.
Portugal's most iconic monument, a filigree stone fortress rising straight out of the Tagus.
