A landmark that earns the queue · Marrakech, Morocco
A triangular open plaza east of Souk Semmarine whose name simply means 'old square'. Historically it was an auction ground with fixed weekly slots for particular goods — wool, carpets, weapons and, until the 19th century, slaves — and the Criée Berbère, the dark Berber carpet auction, still occupies the covered space on its north-east side. The stalls today sell hand-woven baskets, raw perfumes, knitted hats and scarves, Ramadan tea, ginseng and dried animal skins, and the herbalists and apothecaries around the rim are the reason Marrakchis still come. Terrace cafés on the upper floors look straight down into it.
The one square in the souks that is still a working market rather than a stage set.
