A gallery worth the detour · Marrakech, Morocco
Hassan Hajjaj — the Larache-born artist the press calls the Andy Warhol of Morocco — keeps his Marrakech studio open to the public on Derb Aarjane, in the alleys just off Rahba Lakdima. The space works as gallery, tea room and boutique at once, hung with his pop-art photography inside the recycled tins, crates and product packaging he uses as frames and furniture. Hajjaj was shortlisted for the V&A's Jameel Prize in 2009 and won the Sovereign Middle East and Africa Art Prize in 2011, and works between Marrakech, London and New York.
A working artist's studio you can walk straight into, three minutes from the spice square and invisible from it.
