A temple people come back to · Marrakech, Morocco
The complex around the tomb of Abu al-Abbas al-Sabti, who died in 1204 and is the most venerated of the Seven Saints of Marrakech and generally taken as the city's patron. The Saadian sultan Abu Faris Abdallah built the present complex about 1605; Moulay Isma'il rebuilt the tomb chamber in 1720, Muhammad ibn Abdallah renovated it in 1756, and an ornate stucco wall fountain of five arches was added in 1870. Two linked courtyards hold the mausoleum, a mosque, a madrasa and a hospice, and the saint's old reputation for helping the blind still supports an asylum on the site. Non-Muslims may not enter the mosque or the mausoleum — this is an approach and a facade, seen from outside only.
The patron saint's shrine of Marrakech, and the 19th-century braid-sellers' bazaar you walk up to reach it.
