A green pocket the city kept · Marrakech, Morocco
The garden the French painter Jacques Majorelle built around his studio off Avenue Yacoub el Mansour, open to the public since 1947 and rescued and restored by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé. Cacti, palms and bamboo are planted against the hard cobalt blue Majorelle mixed himself, with water channels and pools cutting through. A museum of Islamic art and Berber culture sits inside the grounds, ticketed separately. It is the single most visited garden in Morocco, and it is small — which is exactly why the hour you pick matters more than anything else.
A painter's blue-walled cactus garden that is still, at 8am, one of the quietest places in Guéliz.
