The experience
A tiny self-roasting coffee bar down an alley off Zhongshan North Road, with a handful of seats and a set of house rules that keep it that way. The list runs to single-origin filters from Panama and Ethiopia alongside espresso, gelato and a few baked things including walnut cookies. Coffee is brewed light in the Japanese manner and served in a teacup rather than a mug. It keeps short, awkward hours and does not take cards.
