A green pocket the city kept · Ourika, Morocco
An organic saffron farm and garden at Km 31 on the Ourika road, built up by Christine Ferrari, who left a corporate life in Basel for the valley. Beyond the saffron beds there are medicinal-plant borders, tropical fruit orchards, a herd of donkeys and a troop of peacocks. The set piece is a barefoot sensory trail across different natural surfaces, ending in herbal foot baths and organic argan oil, and then a saffron-scented tisane made from eleven aromatic plants. Allow a couple of unhurried hours; it is about 50 minutes' drive from Marrakech.
A Swiss-run saffron farm where you walk the garden barefoot and finish with your feet in a herb bath.
It's only worth the detour Sep–Jun. The farm takes a summer break and does not reopen until 1 September. Turn up outside that window and you're looking at a different place; we'd rather say so than sell you the photo.
