A view that stops the walk · New York, United States
A United States Army coastal defence post from 1917 to 1995 — 16-inch guns at Battery Harris, later a Nike missile launch site, finally an Army Reserve base — now run by the National Park Service as part of Gateway National Recreation Area. Behind the beach sit coastal dunes, maritime forest and freshwater ponds, and the wilder sections are among the best birding in the city. The gun batteries themselves are sealed off as hazardous, but a viewing platform was built on top of Battery Harris East. There is parking, there are restrooms and picnic tables, and there is nothing else.
An abandoned army fort with a mile of near-empty Atlantic sand behind it.
