A view worth the climb · Tamsui, Taiwan
A wide flat sand beach at the mouth of the Tamsui River facing west into the Taiwan Strait — the closest real open coastline to central Taipei. It ran as a ticketed public bathing beach into the 1970s and was closed to the public in 1999 after water-quality problems and a run of drownings in the rip currents; swimming has been banned outright ever since and the coast guard patrols it. What remains is a very long stretch of sand for walking, cycling and sunset, shared with wedding photographers, kite flyers and horses from the riding centre behind the dunes. There are no showers, no amenities and no lighting after dark.
The nearest sunset over open sea to Taipei, on a beach the city gave up on.
