A green pocket the city kept · Paris, France

One of the 24 English-style gardens Alphand laid out for Napoleon III after Batignolles was annexed to Paris in 1860, and still the green heart of the quarter. A stream falls from a rocky cascade into a pond of ducks, carp and goldfish, under exotic trees, with boules courts, chess tables and a small 1996 greenhouse.
The village-Batignolles Sunday feeling — pram wheels on gravel, boules clicking, nobody photographing anything.
